Thank you!

Thank you all for the condolences regarding the passing of my Grandmother. My family and I appreciate it more than you know.

I had hoped to be there for some of work call tomorrow, but earlier, we were informed (by her assisted living home staff) that if we couldn't have my Grandmother's things out by the first, they would charge us for another month of rent, so we are all meeting there tomorrow to take care of that. If any of you need me tomorrow for questions or what have you I should be available but as reception there is spotty, texting is best.

Have a great work call tomorrow!

WORK CALL: Saturday, June 28, 2014: 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. or until finished.

So close…so very close. Let's knock this out this weekend!

 

Saturday, June 28, 2014: 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. or until finished. 

 

So, here's what's left to do: 

 

·               The wagon will need to be finished.

·               Cardboard Molding and trim for Curry House and File's office.

·               Figure out how to fix corners of Curry House if possible.

·               Also, try to do something with the top part of the Curry house if possible (Poss. Janet)

·               Finish bandstand and attach the bunting.

·               Signs to be hung: Jail and Depot signs.

·               Hang the Chinese lanterns and set up the bandana to drop from the sky. Turn the box hung at the front of the stage so that it turns the other way.

·               Painting: EVERYTHING!

·               Once the building is finished and painted, we need to address set dressing.

·               Make two "arms" behind the proscenium on both SL and SR to hold the curtain back. I hope this will prevent anyone from having to touch the curtain to come out onto stage.

·               Hang Black legs FSL and FSR and the blue legs BSL and BSR. Might need to hang legs at CSL and CSR. 

·               Add Christmas lights onto the back of the black scrim (to make the star curtain). Use safety pins and have them go many different directions, rather than just up and down.

The general consensus is to have Wednesday off.

110 in the Shade - Notes 06/24/2014

I just wanted to give you an update. 

Blocking is going well. Tomorrow night we will start Act II. 

Before we begin Act II; however, I would like to quickly run through Act I, introducing the Ensemble, those who are there. We will perform the numbers that include the Ensemble, but we will NOT run through full songs for the leads. Once we are finished, the Ensemble will either go back out with Gloria to work on music some more or you'll work on the dances... You could also spend time working on characterization, perform your lines for each other and see if you're being expressive enough, think about each of the times that you're on stage and see if you're utilizing your characterizations to the best of your ability...that sort of thing. 

My intention this week, having the Ensemble working with Gloria, is to get you really confident in your singing, make sure you're off book and that you're singing the right notes and lyrics, etc... If you are at all unsure of ANY part of your songs, this is the time to speak with Gloria about it; get clarification.

That said, I appreciate each and every one of you and how hard you are working. I say it a lot, to the point of being annoying I'm sure, but... this is going to be a STELLAR show and it's because of you! 

Now that I've said THAT...I'll point out that we open in exactly one month. Who's excited???

WORK CALL: we will have a work call THIS Saturday, June, 28, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 - 4:00 - 6:00 ish... send your builders so that we can get some stuff finished... we have a few small things and then we have the band stand and the gypsy wagon to finish. 

Also, bear in mind, that the work call following the 4th of July: Saturday, July 5, 2014, we will need (among other talented folks) rafter crawlers (people who don't mind heights and crawling around our rafters-waivers must be signed) to help us with light and sound things. Keep that in mind if you're around then. 

T-SHIRTS: If you haven't let me know your size (which indicates that you DO want a t-shirt, also consider just telling me that you DON'T want a t-shirt, if that's the case) please do so soon. I have to know exact numbers when I speak with the company about ordering them. I will also have color samples soon...to choose from. 

Finally, when you reply to this e-mail letting me know that you've read it, let me know if you are interested in a Wednesday night choreography rehearsal. Bear in mind that we are also doing a Thursday, June 25, 2014 (this week), Monday, June 30, 2014 (next week) and Tuesday, July 1, 2014 (also next week) choreography rehearsal prior to our being off until Monday, July 7, 2014.

Friday, June 20, 2014, Work Call. This is the last non-Saturday work call. Please try to be there if you can. Soon we will start painting, but probably not this week. If you are good with power tools or know of someone who is, send them our way either Friday or Saturday. 

Saturday, June 21, 2014, Photo Shoot. EVERYONE will meet at STG at 7:30 a.m. As you know, I've asked you to keep both of these days open. The good thing is that with everyone there, we can get our big picnic shot, the headshots and all other publicity shots with everyone there.  Folks, NO ONE has an excuse for not being there. I'll let the ones who have to leave early get their headshots done first and then we'll do the full picnic shot. YES it's early, I'm sorry...it'll be one day and then you can go home and take a nap afterwards. OR, better yet, come back to the theatre and take a nap so that we can wake up and finish building the set on Saturday. Some of you will need to leave to go to work or a wedding or what have you...if you've let me know this by now, that's cool. NO new excuses accepted for this weekend. And just a reminder...if you're all there on Saturday, you won't need to be there Sunday as well.  

As a perk, I will have doughnuts and coffee. If anyone wants to bring OJ or Milk, be my guest. We will get dressed, grab some props (baskets, fruit, blankets, any other picnic items, etc...) and head out the door. Those who have to leave may want to drive so that you can leave once your part is over.

Next week, Gloria and/or Monique will meet with the chorus for music/choreography work while the leads and I will be blocking. I do not think the children will be required for this week. If you've missed a lot of rehearsals, you need to work with Gloria, Monique or one of the other wonderfully talented other folks who know the dances and can help. Also, whenever you are not on stage working, you should be working on your dance and so on. 

Some of you who needed tap shoes now have tap shoes. Please let me know who you are so that I can mark you off the list.

This is how tomorrow will go: We will start with a costume parade. As soon as you arrive proceed directly to your first (if you have more than one) costume and then wait for us to line you up. The purpose of this is to see what we have, how it all looks together, what we need and so on. Remember, if you have any accessories, bring them with you tomorrow (Monday) night. Then, we will change from the first costume into the second. Once we are finished, we will need to move to the lobby where we will start the read through. 

For the read through tomorrow (Monday), you may want to bring a voice recorder or use your phone to record where your lines fall. I'll try to bring a recorder and record it, but my recorder hasn't been the most trustworthy device lately.

I'd like to read through the show non-stop. We will play the songs when necessary, but we will not stop otherwise. At Intermission, we will take a quick break then discuss any questions you might have. Then we will do act 2 the same way, followed by any questions you might have. Write your questions down, we don't want to stop the read through if at all possible. Once we are finished with read through, you may leave unless you have lines with in a song. I want to go over those a few times, so that when we do music on Tuesday, you can say your lines at the appropriate times so that we can time it.    

NOTE: for both events tomorrow night, please refrain from talking or being disruptive. We really need to get through this as quickly and smoothly as possible. 

NOTE 2: While you should have these lines memorized...I realize some of you won't. No worries, I'm sure they'll be memorized after tomorrow (Monday) night. Listen to the songs and be familiar with where your lines are and how they fall in the music. 

Be ready to talk about your characters tomorrow (remember your character studies?)

Reminder: 
Tuesday is a music review and begins at 6pm. Get there as soon as you can, but if you're running late, let your stage managers know asap. 

Wednesday at 7pm is Everything Beautiful. 

This is our last call for tap shoes. Give us your regular (street) shoe size if you need tap shoes. 

Also, please let me know if you are ordering t-shirts. I need to know what size to get you. I'm trying to get them to be in the under $13.00 price range, but to do that, we need quantity. I am ordering men's and women's sized shirts. If I can swing them, I will also try to find children's sizes. I'll also bring in a color chart so that we can pick out colors. I agree with some of the comments we've had, that rust would be a cool color, but we'll leave it up to the democratic process.

Tomorrow

I hope you have all had a great weekend!!! This is a long e-mail, but you need to read all of it, in the event that there is ANYTHING in the e-mail that you don't understand.

I know, all of this seems intense, but it's not really. Seriously, this show is really coming together. Please continue to work together and work outside of the rehearsal as well as staying focused during rehearsals. You're all amazing and this combination of wonderful personalities is truly going to make this a not-to-be missed experience! 

One final note...Kenny Leon, in thanking his cast for A Raisin in the Sun, brought up a really excellent point. We all need to listen to one another and we need to be aware of ourselves and others onstage. As actors, it is of the utmost importance that you're aware of what's going on and what being said (and not said) and always be in the moment. Never forget that!

Friday, June 20, 2014, A second opportunity to attend a work call on a day that is NOT Saturday. Also, because of the Photography, we won't be at the theatre working on the set on Saturday. 

Saturday, June 21, 2014 and Sunday, June 22, 2014: Headshot-a-pa-looza!!!

I'll give you more details about the Headshot-a-pa-looza early next week. If you have period-accurate (ish) props to bring with you, that would be awesome! We can use the picnic baskets. We might need blankets and so on. See what you can find and bring it along. 

I know, all of this seems intense, but it's not really. Seriously, this show is really coming together. Please continue to work together and work outside of the rehearsal as well as staying focused during rehearsals. You're all amazing and this combination of wonderful personalities is truly going to make this a not-to-be missed experience! 

One final note...Kenny Leon, in thanking his cast for A Raisin in the Sun, brought up a really excellent point. We all need to listen to one another and we need to be aware of ourselves and others onstage. As actors, it is of the utmost importance that you're aware of what's going on and what being said (and not said) and always be in the moment. Never forget that!
